I admit I’m not a huge sports guy, but we’re in that time of year where the NHL playoffs and the NBA playoffs are going at the same time and these fast-paced, action-packed sports are always super fun to watch.

Yes, we also have MLS soccer, UFL football (who needs the NFL, anyway?), and of course the national pastime of MLB baseball, but it’s the fast sports that really do it for me. In the NHL and NBA, the action is nonstop—every player is constantly adjusting to the flow of the game.

It made me think about the similarities between these sports and effective brainstorming sessions, where rapid transitions and dynamic thinking can spark breakthrough ideas.

  • Continuous movement ✅
  • Quick decisions ✅
  • The ability to change tactics on the fly ✅
  • Balancing speed, strategy, and agility in high-stakes environments ✅ ✅ and ✅

Brainstorming, we already know, is a vital part of the creative process. We do it. You do it. Even some clients may do it. We all do it.

But let’s be honest, not all brainstorming sessions work. So in the spirit of the NHL and NBA playoffs, maybe borrowing a few of their coaching strategies could turn the next brainstorm session into a landslide victory.

Anticipating the Opposition

In basketball and hockey, star players don’t just react to the action—they anticipate it. Whether it’s reading a pass lane or foreseeing an opponent’s deke, they excel at predicting what’s next and acting accordingly.

For brainstorming, this translates into critical thinking: preparing for possible hurdles, challenges, or alternative viewpoints before they happen. That means asking questions like, “Where could this idea fail?” or “What if our target audience doesn’t respond as we expect?”

By mentally playing out scenarios, you maintain an offensive posture in your ideation, rather than scrambling in defense mode when real-world issues arise.

Setting the Tempo

High-level athletes recognize that sometimes you need to speed the game up, and sometimes you need to slow it down.

The same principle applies to creative work.

If your brainstorming session is feeling sluggish, consider ramping things up—challenge each participant to pitch an off-the-wall concept within 30 seconds. Or, if everyone’s firing ideas a mile a minute, slow down to analyze each one for feasibility and impact.

This dual approach of push-and-pull keeps the session balanced, ensuring no one gets stuck in a rut or overwhelmed by the pace.

  1. Short Sprints for Bold Inspiration: Quick bursts of ideation can prevent overthinking and yield unexpected gems—like a fast break leading to an easy slam dunk.
  2. Deliberate Pauses: You have timeouts. Use them. A moment of calm can help the team regroup, refine promising ideas, and gain clarity.

Causing the Play, Not Just Reacting

Elite basketball and hockey teams don’t wait for the right moment—they create it. They set traps, force turnovers, and dictate the rhythm.

In brainstorming, embracing this mindset means daring to present bold, even risky, ideas. You’re not just waiting for the “perfect” concept to appear; you’re shaping the conversation in new directions.

Rather than reacting to existing constraints, consider how you might break them. Sometimes, that one far-fetched suggestion can reframe the entire problem and lead to a breakthrough.

Moving Without the Ball/Puck

In basketball and hockey, some of the most impactful plays are by players who don’t even have the ball or puck. They’re setting screens, cutting through the lane, or pulling defenders away—effectively creating space and opportunity for teammates.

Similarly, a brainstorming session doesn’t thrive solely on who is currently “holding” the conversation. Equally important are those moments when team members are observing, thinking through angles, or quietly reshaping the environment for new ideas.

So, even if you’re not leading the current discussion, you can contribute by listening deeply, clarifying issues, and preparing to add insight at a pivotal moment. This unspoken teamwork can keep the session fluid and allow great concepts to materialize organically.

Team Synergy Over Individual Glory

It’s easy to focus on star players, but real success comes from how the team comes together. Brainstorming thrives on collaboration, where one person’s spark ignites another’s refinement.

This can be compared to a power play in hockey or a pick-and-roll in basketball—two or more people working in tandem to outmaneuver challenges.

Emphasizing “group assists” rather than “hero shots” fosters trust and a sense of shared victory.

  • Boosting Morale: When participants feel encouraged to enhance each other’s suggestions, it builds team cohesion and sparks better ideas.
  • Rapid Iteration: A team mindset allows for fast improvements that might otherwise take days if tackled solo.

5! 4! 3! 2! ….

Tackling creative challenges in a fast-paced environment doesn’t mean sacrificing depth for speed.

By taking cues from the NHL and NBA, we can learn to anticipate problems, set the tempo, cause rather than react, and keep everyone engaged – finding the sweet spot where quick critical thinking and good work align to produce fresh, impactful solutions.

So whether you’re launching a new campaign or refining an existing strategy, remember: a blend of constant motion, proactive plays, and unselfish teamwork can lead to spectacular results.

Ok so who’s got next?
