Navigating the Traffic Lights of Creativity
Summer is here and with it, comes longer days, warmer weather, and construction zones everywhere you go. I mean e v e r y w h e r e. A little annoying, but there’s something about summertime where I don’t even mind it that much.
Traffic and Creativity
I realized the other day in my commute (because, yes we still go into the office – but that’s a topic for another blog) that traffic is a lot like our world of creative work - punctuated by stops, starts, and distractions all around. Even worse is the occasional expectation to go from zero to creative brilliance in a heartbeat that can be both overwhelming and counterproductive.
Let’s take a look at what I’ll call the Traffic Lights of Creativity:
Green Light: Go for Creativity
The green light represents those moments when creativity flows effortlessly. Ideas are comin’ in hot, and you can't get them out fast enough. It's exhilarating, but it's not permanent.
Red Light: The Creative Halt
Then there are the red lights, the moments of creative block where no ideas seem to come through at all. It's frustrating, but it's also a crucial part of the process.
Yellow Light: The Creative Caution
The yellow light, in my humble opinion, is the most important and the most overlooked. It's the signal to slow down, to begin thinking about coming to a rest, and reassessing. Yellow demands your attention, because yellow is where decisions are made.
- Are you stopping, or are you too close and are just going to go through the light?
- If you want to go, is the person in front of you going? If not, then yeah, you’re not going either.
- If you’ve decided to slow down (probably best), then you have to make sure you don’t hit the car in front of you.
- Also, don’t slam the brakes or you’ll get hit by the little blue Prius behind you which, let’s be honest, has been riding your bumper for a while now.
Hot take: Yellow is where the action is.
The European Approach: Anticipation and Preparation
In Europe, the traffic light system adds an extra layer of anticipation, with a yellow light before both stopping at red and starting at green. This is a perfect metaphor for the creative process. It teaches us the value of preparation and mental readiness, whether we're coming to a pause or gearing up to launch into our next creative endeavor.
This period of mental readiness allows us the space to prepare for the shift from inactivity to creativity (or vice versa). The understanding that this period of rest may soon give way to a change of activity lets us plan our next steps more effectively.
Embracing the Yellow Light in Creativity
The yellow light in the creative process is a powerful reminder that not every moment of our creative journey will be (or should be) spent at full throttle. It's a call to:
- Reflect on past work and learn from it
- Gather new ideas and inspiration
- Anticipate challenges
- Prepare for the burst of creativity to come
- Allow ideas to simmer and develop depth
Nurturing Patience and Perspective
In the world of creativity, patience isn’t just a virtue; it’s a necessity. It acknowledges that creativity is not a linear process but a cyclical one, where each phase feeds into the next.
Many rush to produce and innovate, but sometimes forget that creativity isn't just about output; it's about building something lasting and impactful.
The Power of the Pause
In the end, the yellow light in our creative process teaches us the power of the pause. It reminds us that sometimes, to truly move forward, we must be willing to slow down, to anticipate, and to prepare.
It’s a lesson not just for creatives, but for anyone navigating the complexities of modern life.
So, the next time you find yourself at a creative red or green light, remember that every phase has its purpose, and the yellow light could be your cue to prepare, reflect, and ultimately, thrive in your creative endeavors.
